Taking a closer look at the story I noticed quite a few plot holes and in all honesty, the story is completely pointless. While this might be true at first glance, I think that most of this comes from the expressive animation and the great voice-acting, not the story itself.
“Sleeping Dogs” got a lot of praise for its emotional and relatable storytelling. As his last act of revenge, Wei Shen manages to get Pendrew arrested and makes sure that the inmates know about him killing Uncle Po, knowing that they will kill Pendrew before the day is over. It turns out that Pendrew and Uncle Po worked together to boost Pendrew’s career, in exchange for turning a blind eye on the Sun On Yee. In the aftermath it is revealed that it was Pendrew who killed Uncle Po in the hospital to get rid of evidence against him. Wei escapes, killing the enforcer in the process and decides to kill “Big Smile” Lee himself. He also learns that Pendrew blew his cover. Wei manages to convince Jackie to testify against Lee in the upcoming election, but Jackie gets killed and Wei gets kidnapped by “Big Smile” Lee’s head enforcer. He still manages to rescue Jackie and learns that “Big Smile” Lee was behind the kidnapping. Wei tries to rescue him, but it turns out to be an ambush. Soon after, “Big Smile” Lee’s gang openly attacks the Water Street Gang, but Wei manages to fight them off.ĭuring the funeral, 18K had captured Jackie and buried him alive. Following the fight, “Big Smile” Lee demands to become the new chairman, but the other Triad leaders agree on having a proper election. At Uncle Po’s funeral, where Sonny Wo is arrested by Pendrew, yet another group of 18K members assaults the group of Red Poles. During the next few missions, Wei is tasked with finding evidence against Sonny Wo, one of “Big Smile” Lee’s business partners and financial backers.Īfter Uncle Po dies in the hospital, Pendrew tries to pull Wei off the case, but Wei refuses, stating that if “Big Smile” Lee would become the new chairman, gang violence would reach new heights. Some time later, another group of 18K members storms the hospital and tries to kill Uncle Po, but Wei manages to fend them off. Shortly after, he is forced to step down by Wei and “Broken Nose” Jiang. In order to keep “Big Smile” Lee from taking over, “Broken Nose” Jiang suggests Po’s nephew for the position. With Uncle Po being hospitalized, the Sun On Yee needs a temporary chairman to lead the operations. On command of Uncle Po, Wei becomes a Red Pole and is now officially the leader of the Water Street Gang.
Wei captures him and delivers him to Winston’s mother, wo tortures and ultimately kills Dogeyes.
At the same time, he investigates the assault on the wedding and finds out that it actually was Dogeyes who has been behind the attack. With Winston dead, “Big Smile” Lee tries to take over the Water Street Gang’s territory, but Wei decides to fight back. Winston and his bride are killed, and Uncle Po is wounded, but saved by Wei Shen. Some time later, at Winston’s wedding, armed members of the 18K Triad show up and massacre the guests. After this attack, the Sun On Yee’s chairman, Uncle Po, steps in to end the fighting within the Triad. Wei helps Winston in the escalating conflict between him and Dogeyes, which ultimately results in Wei destroying one of Dogeyes’ warehouses and kidnapping the head of his drug manufacturing. Through his former friend Jackie, he gets introduced to Winston Chu, one of the Red Poles. Wei Shen, an undercover cop, is tasked with infiltrating and destabilizing the Sun On Yee Triad.
